First trench dug by Nelson men on night of landing April 1915. Trench was from beach to 1/4 mile inland and men linked up with Australians. The Nelson men protected the beach on the left flank the first night. Sergeant Hammond of Richmond on right, Sergeant Major Glanville looking through glasses.
