Head and shoulders studio portrait of Sergeant Godfrey John Hammond (Serial No. 6/247) in military uniform. Hammond was born on 30 June 1889 in Appleby. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Alexander G. Hammond (father), Richmond, Nelson, New Zealand. Before World War One Hammond was working as a farmer for his father in Richmond, Nelson. He joined the Canterbury Infantry Battalion during World War One and embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand for Wellington, New Zealand. From Wellington Hammond joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. He was invalided back to New Zealand on 25 September 1915 and finally discharged on 18 February 1916. Hammond later died on 13 November 1937.
