Description
Full length studio portrait of three men in military uniform. Red cross emblems are on their sleeves. The man standing on the right is Major Alfred Reginald Kingsford (serial no. 3/864 and 12084). Kingsford was born in Kent, England in May 1891. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs A. Harris (mother), 14 Scott's Lane, Shortlands, Bromley, Kent, England. Kingsford worked as a photographer for Miss Rose Frank of the Tyree Studio before enlisting for service during World War One. He embarked with the 6th Reinforcements Medical Corps on 14 August 1915 from Wellington, New Zealand for Suez, Egypt. Kingsford’s first rank was Corporal. He served for one year and three hundred and thirty two days in Egypt and Western Europe. On 19 May 1917 Kingsford was discharged from the Medical Corps for a commission in the Royal Flying Corps. When Kingsford returned to Nelson after the war, in 1919, he bought the photographic business, Broma Studio, from A B Hurst who in turn had bought it from William Brown. His son, Hugh Kingsford, joined the business in 1942. Kingsford also served during World War Two and was promoted several times during his service in both wars. His final rank was Major. Kingsford died on 11 April 1987 in Stoke.
The man sitting at the centre is thought to be Sergeant Major Jack Alan Montgomerie (serial no. 3/858). Montgomerie was born on 29 September 1889 in Reefton, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs J.A. Montgomerie (father), Bridge Street, Reefton, New Zealand. Montgomerie worked as a draughtsman for the Government Survey Department before enlisting for service during World War One. He embarked with the 6th Reinforcements Medical Corps on 14 August 1915 from Wellington, New Zealand for Suez, Egypt. He served for one year and three days in Egypt and the Balkans including Gallipoli and Mudros. Montgomerie was discharged on 21 May 1916.
The third man seated on the right is unidentified at this time.
