Sergeant Herman John Wendelborn (serial no. 7/1160).
Wendleborn changed his name by deed poll from Wendelborn to Windleburn on 21 March 1961 and his name appears as "Windleborn" in the WWI nominal rolls.
Born on 16 August 1896 in Riwaka, Nelson, New Zealand, the seventh child of Johann (John) and Lois Windleborn of Nelson, New Zealand.
On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as J Windleborn (father), Richmond, Nelson, New Zealand.
Enlisted from Waimea West, New Zealand for service during World War One on 16 February 1915. He stated his year of birth to be 1894 so as to appear older and therefore be eligible for service.
Embarked with the 5th Reinforcements Canterbury Mounted Rifles as a Trooper on 13 June 1915 from Wellington, New Zealand for Suez, Egypt.
Wounded in the head at Gallipoli in 1915 and admitted to hospital in Cairo. From there he returned to New Zealand on 11 February 1916 and was admitted to Hamner Hospital, Christchurch.
Officially discharged from the army on 1 July 1916 as no longer physically fit for active service.
Re-enlisted with the army on 20 March 1919 and served in the Home Service Section, New Zealand Military Forces in New Zealand until 31 October 1919.
After the war Wendelborn married Winifred Maude Reid in Christchurch on 15 July 1921. The two had met while Wendelborn was at Hamner Hospital, where Winifred was working as a nurse. They had three children, including a set of twins.
Served in World War Two. He re-enlisted with the Home Guard on 3 September 1939 and again he changed his date of birth at enlistment. This time he made himself seem younger (40 instead of 43).
Served at Papakura Military Camp, Waiouru Military Camp, and HMNZS Devonport until his discharge on 2 January 1944.
Worked as a farmer, teamster, sheep station manager and a civil servant post-war.
Died on 13 September 1962 in Auckland, New Zealand. He was sixty-six years old.
Buried in Waikumete Cemetery, Glen Eden, Auckland, New Zealand.
Two of Wendelborn's brothers also enlisted for service during World War One. Laurence Vincent Wendelborn (serial no. 7/291) died of broncho pneumonia in 1918 and Hyam John Melveen Wendelborn enlisted but hadn't left New Zealand before the war ended in 1918.
