Biography
Captain Ernest James Fawcett (serial no. 6/2894).
Born on 1 November 1892 in Nelson, New Zealand.
On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as William P. Fawcett (father), Tadmor, Nelson, New Zealand.
Worked for himself as a farmer before enlisting for service during World War One. He enlisted from Tadmor, Nelson, New Zealand and embarked with the 7th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion on 9 October 1915 from Wellington, New Zealand for Suez, Egypt.
Served for three years and one hundred and thirty days in Egypt and Western Europe. Fawcett is mentioned in 'The New Zealand Division 1916 - 1919: A Popular History Based on Official Records'.
Awarded the Military Cross medal for gallantry in the field. He is said to have shown conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in leading his men to a enemy strong point. His total disregard for personal danger was a great example to his men.
Discharged in England on 5 October 1918.
Died on 12 December 1961.
