Private Wilmot Robert Grooby (serial no.31491).
Born on 5 May 1896 in Pangatotara, Motueka, New Zealand, the son of George and Rhoda Grooby, of Pangatotara.
On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs A.E. Lockyer (aunt), Morrison Street, Nelson, New Zealand.
Worked in Pangatotara as a farmer before enlisting with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War One.
Embarked with the 19th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company on 15 November 1916 from Wellington, New Zealand for Plymouth or Devonport, England.
Served for less than a year in Western Europe.
The last unit Grooby served with was the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, attached Divisional Employment Company.
Killed in action in Ypres, Belgium on 12 August 1917. He was twenty years old.
Buried in Nieppe Communal Cemetery, France, grave reference V. B. 3.
