F G Gibbs, 1866-1953, was a well known schoolmaster at Nelson College and then Headmaster of Central School, 1893-1923, and advisor to Thomas Cawthron, a botanist and community leader. He was heavily involved in The Royal Society of New Zealand Astronomical branch and the Nelson observatory. F.G. Gibbs had charge of the Atkinson Observatory from 1905 onwards. He was closely involved with the Nelson Institute and the development of the Nelson Provincial Museum as well as the Nelson Historical Society, the Nelson School of Music, the Nelson Provincial Progress League and the Bishop Suter Art Gallery. He had investments in many mineral ventures within the Province. He remained a bachelor.
He died on the 16th January 1953.
