William Russell Rawlings was born 4 Dec 1849 at Nelson to William Russell Rawlings and Mary Rowe known as Jinifer. William senior died in 1854 of an asthma attack in South America. His mother married Appo Hocton 2 years later. Appo was from Canton, China and raised William as his own. William used Hocton as his surname. Rawlings changed to Rawling or Rowlings and then Rowling. William married Emily Sophia Burnett and had a daughter Roseanna Agnes Hocton
