Description
Full length studio portrait of Mr Knapp. He sits holding an instrument on his lap. Distinguishing features include his large forehead and long sideburns. Studio props include objects on a desk, chair, and carpet. The backdrop is a painted mural of a decorative wall with a large open window. An outdoor scene including a balcony, baluster, trees, body of water, hills and sky are depicted through the window. Exposed studio wall is visible beyond the backdrop. The triangular base and vertical pole of a posing apparatus is visible. The markings '34' and cursive script are in mirror writing.

Photo - James Knapp - Immigrant - 1842 Married Ellen White. Their children were: Between December, 1843 and 1850, the Knapps were living in Nelson as James and Ellen’s first child William Harvey was born and listed as “Born in Nelson” in family records on 4th December, 1843. James and Ellen soon had another three arrivals with the birth of: Charles Knapp 21st June, 1845 Born in Nelson Agnes Emily Knapp 15th February, 1848 Born in Nelson Kempster James Knapp 27th July,1850 Born in Nelson Jurors lists published in the Nelson Examiner state that James Knapp was living in East Nile Street, with the occupation of a labourer up until 1851. They then moved to Spring Grove where the rest of the family were born.
