Description
The collection comprises diaries 1847 - March 1848; May 1854 -1876. Mainly day to day account of local and family affairs at Nelson, with some jottings of accounts and wool prices, stock and land holdings, and brief mention of political topics, farming gardening and a few irregular weather reports. Note - early diaries were made of a chemically impregnated paper with a special metallic pencil is an indelible ink. Diary 1855 has the pencil attached. Diary for 1869 includes references to the Duke of Edinburgh's visit on HMS Galatea. A typed transcript for the 1868-1876 diaries is copyright for Peter Monro, the transcriber, MS-COPY-007
