Scrimshaw, Brittania

Description
Scrimshaw, engraving on whale tooth, highlighted with black pigment. The engraving depicts Brittannia seated on a dog. She sits with one arm outstretched in front of her, and her other arm by her side, draped over a trident pole, which leans against her shoulder. Her face is in profile, and she wears voluminous Romanesque robes and a Centurion's helmet. The dog lies with one outstretched leg, upon which its head rests, on a striped ground.

From the collection of Frederick V Knapp (1863-1945).
