Description
Rectangular wooden cabin chest, with hinged lid. Both the lid and base of the chest are lipped. The lid has two internal hand forged strap hinges. On the proper left of the chest is a metal chest handle with back mounting plate, and on the proper right the chest handle is missing. There is a back mounting plate, and a hole has been drilled either side of the plate through which a rope has been threaded, to act as a handle. The chest has a warded lock, the key hole is in the top front. Inside the chest, top proper right, is a small lidded rectangular compartment. The name 'Berd McMahon' is carved on the lid. The chest belonged to Bernard McMahon who arrived at the Nelson settlement on the Whitby (ship) on 4 November 1841. On the ship's passenger list Bernard is listed as an agricultural labourer, aged 28.
