Oil painting on rectangular stretched canvas, with gold and cream mount, wood frame, and glass. The painting depicts Robert Draper and Emma Jane Ricketts. Robert Draper sits with one hand on his knee, with his legs crossed. He has brown hair and a moustacheless beard, and wears a black suit, white shirt and black bowtie. Emma-Jane Ricketts stands with one hand behind the head of Robert Draper and her other arm by her side. She wears a double breasted jacket with embellishments at the collar, cuffs and waist. Distinguishing features include the red chair upon which Robert Draper sits, and the blue accents in the headdress, earrings and necktie of Emma-Jane Ricketts. The background is grey-green.

The painting is not titled, signed or dated.

Emma Jane Ricketts was the only daughter of Ambrose and Elizabeth Ricketts who arived in Nelson on 15 March 1842, on the ship Bolton. Emma Jane married Robert Draper on 22 January 1868.
