Description
Handcoloured lithograph on cream paper with card backing. The print is a botanical illustration of part of a plant with fruit. Two branching brown stems are depicted. The green acuminate-shaped leaves have parallel venation. The red and green round berries have pointed bottoms, in many branched clusters.
The print is titled "Rhipogonum scandens. (Supple-jack)" and on a piece of paper affixed to paper "KAREAO or PIRITA" and "Tall climbing plant with long and slender stems forming interwoven wiry masses in the forest very difficult to penetrate. Flowers very small greenish while berries bright scarlet variable in size. Abundant throughout New Zealand. The long underground root stocks have been used as Sarsaparilla and the stems for basket work and hurdles."
