Description
The Collection of Prints in Imitation of Drawings is the culmination of a lifetime's collecting, scholarship and patronage. Charles Rogers (1711-1784) commissioned the leading engravers of the day to reproduce works in his own and other English collections in as faithful a manner as possible. The plates are mostly stipple-engraved and printed in bisque, sepia, grey and grey-green within tinted borders imitative of contemporary mats. Indeed, "...that these prints may be faithful Imitations, they are engraved in the same way, as well as of the same size, as the Originals are drawn; and printed, as nearly as possible, in the same colours" (Preface). Includes the art and lives of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rafael, Caravaggio, Corregio, Parmigianino, Poussin, Boucher, Rubens, van Dyck, Rembrandt, and many others. Rogers published this work at one of the most exciting epochs in English painting and drawing. The Royal Academy was founded in 1768, Joshua Reynolds was very active selling his own work and that of Old Masters he obtained in Italy, and the “Custom House Group” of collectors was in full swing. Rogers’ is a truly splendid edition, redolent of those most important years.
