Letters from various early Nelson settlers, filed chronologically, and providing a graphic description of the settlement. Descriptions include the fort on Church Hill, the Wairau incident, the working men of Nelson's petition to The New Zealand Company via Captain Wakefield in regard to their prospects, 14th January 1843 (Workers' Petition) and another petition from the working men at Waimea South, Nelson, 22 June 1843 for a fort for protection from the Māori.
