Copy of an outdoor photograph of Rifleman Charles Daniel James (serial no. 41203) in military uniform. James was born on 10 April 1891 in Murchison, New Zealand, the son of John and Annie James, of Murchison, Nelson, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as John James (father), Murchison, Nelson, New Zealand. James worked as a farmer for McNee co ltd before enlisting for service during World War One. He embarked on 14 March 1917 with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade Reinforcements H Company from Wellington, New Zealand for Devonport, England. He served for only five months in Western Europe. The last unit he served in was the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion, 3rd. James died of wounds on 6 August 1917 in Belgium. He was twenty-six years old. James is buried in Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, Nord, France.
