Rifleman Thomas JAMES (1888-1963). NZEF Service # 24/1091 : Rifleman, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 2nd Battalion, D. Company, NZEF. Born 20 August 1888 - at Murchison. Son of J. James - of Murchison. Prior to enlistment for war service Thomas James was employed as a Farmer - at Murchison. Thomas James enlisted for war service - on 29 May 1915 - at Trentham Military Training Camp, Wellington. He was 27 years of age. On 9 October 1915 Rifleman James left New Zealand for overseas war service - aboard HMNZ Transport Ship 'Tahiti'. On 22 November 1915 Rifleman James disembarked - from his transport ship from New Zealand - at Suez, Egypt. Rifleman Thomas James served at Egypt (1915-1916) and France & Belgium (1916-1917-1918). On 6 April 1916 Rifleman James embarked - from Alexandria, Egypt - for war service at France. On 7 June 1917 Rifleman James was wounded in action - at Messines, Belgium. He re-joined his unit - on 12 June 1917. On 1 February 1919 Rifleman James embarked from London, England - aboard SS 'Hororata' - and he returned home to New Zealand. He was discharged from the NZEF - on 13 April 1919 - at New Zealand. Rifleman Thomas James had served overseas - with the NZEF - for 3 years & 158 days.
