Copy of a photograph of Rifleman James Ernest Gibbs (serial no. 53773) in military uniform. Gibbs was born on 28 February 1897 in Wakefield, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Albert Gibbs (father), Wakefield, Nelson, New Zealand. Gibbs worked for his father as a farmer before enlisting for service during World War One. He joined the New Zealand Rifle Brigade and embarked with the Reinforcements H Company on 16 July 1917 from Wellington, New Zealand for Liverpool, England. Gibbs served in Western Europe. The last unit he served in was the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion, 3rd. Gibbs was killed in action in the Somme, France on 6 April 1918. He is buried in Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps, Somme, France, grave reference III. E. 7.
