Description
Head and shoulders studio portrait of a man in military uniform. Thought to possibly be Sapper David Alexander Cate (serial no.4/1112). Cate was born on 1 October 1894 in Takaka, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as G. Cate (father), Hamama, Takaka, New Zealand. Cate worked as a farm hand for Archibald Henry Cate in Takaka before enlisting for service during World War One. He enlisted from Takaka, Nelson, New Zealand, and joined the 6th Reinforcements Field Engineers. He embarked on 14 August 1915 from Wellington, New Zealand for Suez, Egypt. Cate served for over four years in Egypt and Western Europe before being discharged on 6 August 1919.
