Full length studio portrait of Private Leslie Malcolm Newlove (serial no. 31530) in military uniform, and his bride Maud Myrtle Newlove nee Grooby. Leslie Malcolm Newlove was born on 18 June 1895 in Takaka, New Zealand, the son of Mary Ann Newlove. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs L.M. Newlove (wife), Takaka, Nelson, New Zealand. Newlove worked for himself as a farmer before enlisting for service during World War One. He embarked with the 19th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company on 15 November 1916 from Wellington, New Zealand for Plymouth or Devonport, England. He served for almost a year in Western Europe. The last unit he served in was the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion. Newlove was recorded as missing believed killed in action on 12 October 1917 in Ypres, Belgium. He was aged twenty-two years old. Newlove's memorial is located in Tyne Cot Memorial, Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, memorial reference NZ Apse, Panel 2. Leslie Malcolm Newlove was the youngest of the three Newlove brothers who fought during World War One. His brothers were Leonard Charles Newlove and Edwin Newlove. All three brothers were killed within a week in October 1917.

The bride is believed to be be Leslie Malcolm Newlove's wife Maud Myrtle Newlove nee Grooby. Maud Myrtle Newlove was born in 1894 in Takaka, New Zealand. She married Leslie Malcolm Newlove one month before he embarked.
