Description
Head and shoulders studio portrait of a man in military uniform. Thought to be Private Samuel Crooks (serial no. 17130). Crooks is thought to have been born on 17 September 1872 in Ireland. Crooks military personnel file lists his next of kin as Mrs Hilda Evelyn Crooks (wife) Vanguard Street, Nelson. He married Hilda Evelyn Richardson on 28 June 1910 in Nelson, New Zealand. They had one child together in 1911. Crooks worked as a factory hand at Kirkpatrick’s in Nelson before enlisting for service during World War One. He embarked with the New Zealand Veterinary Corp 15th Reinforcements. It is unknown how long Crooks served during World War One.
