Description
Three quarter length studio portrait of Private Joseph Henry Bird (serial no. 15469 and 819117) in military uniform. Bird was born on 29 November 1872 in England. He worked as a factory hand for Kirkpatricks in Nelson before enlisting for service during World War One. He embarked with the 15th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company on 26 July 1916 from Wellington, New Zealand for Devonport, England. Bird served for two years and one hundred and thirty one days in Western Europe before being discharged on 13 December 1918. Bird went on to serve in World War Two. Bird died on 22 March 1954 in Nelson, New Zealand.
