Head and shoulders studio portrait of Private Amos Thomas Wilson Burrough (serial no. 42786) in military uniform. The name written on the negative's wrapper reads 'Burroughs' however on researching men named 'Burroughs' and 'Burrough' on the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph Database it is believed the spelling on the wrapper is incorrect and the man depicted on the negative is Amos Thomas Wilson Burrough.
Burrough was born on 30 August 1893 in Carterton, New Zealand, the son of William and Ellen Burrough. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as W. Burrough (father), Richmond, Nelson, New Zealand. Before enlisting for service during World War One Burrough worked for himself as a general merchant and farmer. He enlisted with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War One and embarked with the 24th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Regiment, C Company on 26 April 1917 from Wellington, New Zealand for Plymouth, England. The last unit Burrough served in was the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, C Company. He was killed in action in Ypres, Belgium on 14 December 1917. Burrough was aged twenty-three years old. Burrough is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, grave reference XII. A. 10.
