Full length studio portrait of Corporal Ralph George Sparrow (serial no. 7/274 and 3/21/25) in military uniform and his wife Leslie Irene Sparrow nee Hyland in a wedding dress, carrying a large bouquet. Ralph George Sparrow was born on 6 June 1885 in New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Frederick George Sparrow (father), Takaka, Nelson, New Zealand. Sparrow worked for himself as a farmer before enlisting for service during World War One. He embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand for Wellington, New Zealand. From Wellington he joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. Sparrow served for one year and two hundred and sixty-four days in Egypt and the Balkans including Gallipoli. Sparrow was discharged on 4 June 1916. In 1917 he married Leslie Irene Hyland. Sparrow went on to also serve during World War Two. Sparrow died on 8 January 1976 in Tahunanui, Nelson, New Zealand.
Leslie Irene Sparrow nee Hyland was born in 1889, the daughter of Thomas Hyland and Isabella 'Bella' McFarlane. She married Ralph George Sparrow in 1917 in New Zealand. Both Ralph George Sparrow and Leslie Irene Sparrow nee Hyland are buried in Marsden Cemetery, Nelson, New Zealand.
