Description
Head and shoulders studio portrait of a man in military uniform. Thought to be Private Edward Harold Whiting (serial no.6/774). Whiting was born on 23 June 1894 in Nelson, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as David Henry Whiting (father), Maitai, Nelson, New Zealand. Whiting is thought to have served as a survey cadet for the Survey Department before enlisting for service during World War One. He embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand for Wellington, New Zealand. From Wellington he joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. Whiting served for four years and two hundred and eighty days in Egypt, the Balkans including Gallipoli and Mudros and Western Europe including France and Belgium. Whiting survived the war and was discharged on 24 May 1919. Whiting married Bertha Whiting on 8 February 1918 in Paris, France. Whiting died on 25 December 1984 in Auckland.
