Lieutenant (and later Captain) Rupert Worley MC MID. 1NZEF # 14544 : New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 2nd Battalion, 13th Reinforcements, 1NZEF (also served with the Otago Infantry Regiment at France & Belgium 1917-1918). Born 24 September 1893 - at Nelson. Son of William Frederick Worley and his wife Susan (nee Witney) of 128 Trafalgar Street Nelson. William was born England and Susan was born (1855) at Pakawau, Nelson District. Brother of (1) Lieutenant Clarence Palliser Worley : 1NZEf Service # 8/3806 and (2) 2nd Lieutenant Ralph Palliser Worley : 1NZEF Service # 22217. Prior to enlistment for war service Rupert Worley was employed as a Civil Engineer at Auckland. Rupert Worley enlisted for war service on 11 January 1916. Served France & Belgium (1917-1918). Mentioned in NZEF Despatches (1918) : "Specially Mentioned in Despatches by Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig for Distinguished and Gallant Service and Devotion to Duty during the period 16 September 1918 to 15 March 1919". Also awarded the Military Cross (1918) : "His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to confer the Military Cross (to Captain Rupert Worley) for Gallantry & Devotion to Duty in the field" (NZEF Orders : 15 January 1918 and London Gazette 9 January 1918). Returned, home to New Zealand, after war service, and discharged from the 1NZEF 24 February 1919. In 1924 Rupert Worley was living at Hamilton.
