Description
Three quarter length studio portrait of a seated man in military uniform. Thought to be Private Stanley Edward Barraball (serial no. 6/3244). Barraball was born in 1889 in London, England. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs A. Barraball (mother), 21 Bushward Road, Kew, England. Barraball worked as a steward for the Golden Bay Shipping Company before enlisting for service during World War One. He enlisted from the Tasman Hotel, Nelson, New Zealand and embarked with the 8th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion on 13 November 1915 from Wellington, New Zealand for Suez, Egypt. He served for two years and two hundred and thirty-seven days in Egypt and Western Europe including campaigns in France. The last unit he served in was the New Zealand Cyclist Battalion. He was discharged as no longer physically fit for war service on 17 April 1919. Barraball died on 7 January 1922 in New Zealand.
