Trooper Robert James WALKER (1888-1958). NZEF Service # 7/712 : Trooper, Canterbury Mounted Rifles Brigade, 10th (Nelson) Squadron, 2nd Reinforcements, NZEF. Born 13 October 1888 - at Collingwood, Tasman District, Nelson Region. Robert was the son of Alexander Walker - of Ferntown, Collingwood, Tasman. Prior to enlistment for war service Robert Walker was employed as a Labourer - at Prouse & Saunders Flax Mill - at Mangarakau, Collingwood District. Robert Walker enlisted for war service - on 20 October 1914. He was 26 years of age. At enlistment he was posted to the Canterbury Mounted Rifles Brigade, 2nd Reinforcements, NZEF. On 14 December 1914 Trooper Walker left New Zealand for overseas war service - with the 2nd Reinforcements NZEF - aboard HMNZ Transport Ship T13 'Verdala'. Trooper Walker served at Egypt (1914-1915) & Gallipoli (1915) & Egypt (1916). On 16 August 1915 Trooper Walker dis-embarked at Gallipoli (Dardanelles), Turkey - to serve with the ANZAC forces. He was posted to the 10th (Nelson) Squadron - of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles Brigade (who at Gallipoli were serving as infantry men). Five days later - on 21 August 1915 - Trooper Walker was wounded in action - at Gallipoli. He was medically evacuated, firstly, to Mudros (Greece) - and then on 26 August 1915 he was medically evacuated by sea - aboard Hospital Ship HS 'Franconia' - to England. On 9 September 1915 Trooper Walker was admitted to the Welsh Metropolitan War Hospital - at Whitechurch, Cardiff, Wales. Trooper Walker returned to Egypt in 1916 - and from there he returned home to New Zealand aboard HT 'Tahiti' - embarking 5 May 1916 from Suez, Egypt. At New Zealand - on 2 September 1916 - Trooper Robert Walker was discharged from the NZEF - as no longer physically fit for further war service on account of wounds received in action - at Gallipoli (1915).
