Description
Head and shoulders studio portrait of John Malcolm Stringer (serial number 2/243) in military uniform. Stringer, a carpenter in Nelson, was a Gunner during World War One and embarked with the Main Body, as part of the Field Artillery, on 16 October 1914 from Wellington to Egypt. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli and Western Europe. His next of kin is listed as J.A. Stringer, 66 Haven Road, Nelson, New Zealand, on the Auckland War Memorial Cenotaph database. Stringer survived the war and was discharged on 14 May 1919. He also served in the Army during World War II (serial number 807349). He died in Christchurch on 24 March 1974.
