Description
Head and shoulders studio portrait of a man in military uniform. Thought to be Private Herbert Campbell Newport (serial no. 54385). Newport was born on 14 April 1890 in Nelson, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database he is listed as the son of Son of Henry and Susan Newport, of 3 Pickering Terrace, Kaiwarra, Wellington. Newport worked as Foreman at a freezing works before enlisting to serve during World War One. He embarked with the 28th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Regiment, C Company on 26 July 1917 from Wellington, New Zealand for Plymouth, England. Newport was killed in action on 29 September 1918 in Havrincourt, France. The last unit he served with was the Canterbury Infantry Regiment. He was 27 years old at the time of his death. His memorial is located at Grevillers (New Zealand) Memorial, Grevillers British Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France.

This is very unlikely to be the suggested identification. The uniform dates from 1914/15. The subject is in 12th (Nelson) Regiment badges. Herbert Newport didn't enlist until 1917, and did not serve in the 12th (Nelson) Regiment. He had no pre-war service, so nothing in this photo aligns with what we know about Herbert Newport.
