The service man (in military uniform) in this photograph is: Sergeant-Gunner Harry Bennett (1892-1965). NZEF Service # 2/660 : Sergeant-Gunner New Zealand Field Artillery, 1st Brigade, 1st Battery, Main Body, NZEF. Born 11 May 1892 - at Nelson. Harry was the son of Mrs Mary Bennett - of Trafalgar Street, Nelson. Prior to enlistment for war service Harry Bennett was employed as a Carpenter - by J.K. Johnston - of Nelson. Harry Bennett enlisted for war service - on 9 September 1914 - at Nelson. At enlistment he was posted as a Driver with the New Zealand Field Artillery, 1st Brigade, 1st Battery, Main Body, NZEF. Driver Bennett left New Zealand for overseas war service - on 16 October 1914 - with the Main Body NZEF. Driver (and later Sergeant-Gunner) Bennett served at Egypt (1914-1915-1916); Gallipoli (1915) and France & Belgium (1916-1917-1918). Gunner Bennett was wounded in action - 25 September 1916 - at the Somme Sector, Armentieres, France. Although wounded Gunner Bennett remained with his unit. Gunner Bennett was promoted to the rank of Sergeant at France. Sergeant Bennett returned home to New Zealand - embarking from England on 10 March 1919. Sergeant Harry Bennett was discharged from the NZEF - on 24 July 1919. Harry Bennett died - 18 November 1965 - at Nelson.
