Copy of a photograph of a man in military uniform. Thought to be Corporal Philip Harold Baigent (serial no. 7/159 and 3/21/1). Baigent was born on 26 December 1887, the son of Annie Louisa Baigent and William Charles Baigent. Before enlisting for service during World War One Baigent worked as a farmer for his father in Takaka. Baigent joined the Canterbury Mounted Rifles during World War One and embarked on on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand for Wellington, New Zealand. From Wellington Baigent joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. Baigent served for one year and three hundred and twenty-seven days in Egypt and Gallipoli. He was discharged on 6 July 1916. Baigent went on to serve during World War Two. He died aged eighty-four. His grave is located at Marsden Valley Cemetery, Stoke, Nelson, New Zealand.
