Description
Head and shoulders studio portrait of Corporal Arthur Lake Batchelor (serial number 7/163) in military uniform. Batchelor, a Motueka sheep farmer, was the son of Frederick Craven Batchelor and Elizabeth Batchelor, Motueka, Nelson. He joined the Canterbury Mounted Rifles as a trooper during World War One. He embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand for Wellington, New Zealand. From Wellington Batchelor joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. Batchelor later became a Corporal. Batchelor died of wounds in Palestine on 27 November 1917, aged 28 years. He also served at Gallipoli. He is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
