Description
Head and shoulders studio portrait of Lieutenant Stanley Berryman (serial number 7/166) in military uniform. Berryman, self employed farmer, was the son of Henry Giles Berryman and Mary Redman Berryman, of Stanley Downs, Kohatu, Nelson. Born at Waimate, Canterbury, New Zealand. He enlisted as a Sergeant in August 1914. The Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database has two embarkation dates and locations. One on 16 October 1914 from Lyttelton, Canterbury, with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. The second on 31 May 1917 with the 26th Reinforcements, Mounted Rifles from Wellington New Zealand. Berryman was wounded twice at Gallipoli. He was killed in action in Palestine on 30 March 1918 and is buried in the Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery, Syria. He is remembered on the War Memorial in Ashburton, New Zealand.
