Head and shoulders studio portrait of James Bernard Coley (Serial No. 7/543) in military uniform. Coley was born on 12 March 1893 in Foxton, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memeorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs E.J. Sullivan (mother), Shannon, New Zealand. Coley enlisted for service during World War One from Richmond where he was working as a farmer. He served as a trooper with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles and embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand for Wellington, New Zealand. From Wellington Coley joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. Coley survived the war and was discharged on 27 February 1919. He died in Palmerston North on 10 April 1981 aged 88.

Trooper Coley served at Egypt (1914-1916); Gallipoli (1915) - and France & Belgium (1916-1917- 1918). At France & Belgium Trooper Coley served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 12th (Nelson) Company, NZEF. In October 1917 Private James B. Coley was awarded the 'Military Medal' (MM) - for 'Acts of Gallantry in the Field' - at France or Belgium. On 24 December 1918 Trooper (and later Private) James B Coley returned to New Zealand - aboard SS 'Briton'. For his full military record refer to New Zealand Online Cenotaph : www.aucklandmuseum.com
