Head and shoulders studio portrait of a man in military uniform. Thought to be Trooper Vincent Raymond Davy (Serial No. 7/186). Davy was born on 9 April 1891. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as William T. Davy, Harley Street, Nelson, New Zealand. Davy enlisted for service during World War One from Karamea, New Zealand. He joined the Canterbury Mounted Rifles and embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand for Wellington, New Zealand. From Wellington Davy joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. Davy was discharged on 30 January 1918 as no longer physically fit for active service.

Trooper (later Sergeant) Vincent Raymond DAVY DCM (1891-1961). NZEF Service # 7/186 : Canterbury Mounted Rifles Brigade, 10th (Nelson) Squadron, Main Body, NZEF. Later - Sergeant, New Zealand Field Artillery, 3rd Brigade, 15th Battery, NZEF. * Awarded 'Distinguished Conduct Medal' (DCM) : 14 August 1917 : 4th Supplement to 'London Gazette' : 14 August 1917 (see Citation for his DCM at the end of this biography). Born 9 April 1891 - at Motueka, Tasman District. Vincent was the son of William T. Davy - of Harley Street, Nelson. Prior to enlistment for war service Vincent Davy was a Surveyor's Chain-Man - employed by the L & T Department - Nelson. Vincent Davy enlisted for war service - on 14 August 1914 - at Nelson. He was 23 years of age. At enlistment he was posted as a Trooper with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles Brigade, 10th (Nelson) Squadron, Main Body, NZEF. On 16 October 1914 Trooper Davy left New Zealand for overseas war service - with the Main Body NZEF - aboard HMNZ Transport Ship T11 'Athenic'. On 4 December 1914 Trooper Davy disembarked - from his transport ship from New Zealand - at Suez, Egypt. Trooper Vincent Davy served at Egypt (1914-1915); Gallipoli (1915) and France & Belgium (1916-1917). On 3 March 1915 Trooper Davy transferred as a Driver to the New Zealand Field Artillery, 3rd Brigade, 15th Battery NZEF - at Egypt. In April 1915 Driver Davy was sent to serve with the ANZAC forces at Gallipoli, Turkey. On 6 April 1916 Driver Davy embarked from Alexandria, Egypt - for war service at France. At France Driver Davy was promoted to the rank of Corporal - and then Sergeant - New Zealand Field Artillery, NZEF. In August 1917 Sergeant Davy was wounded in action - at Belgium. He was medically evacuated from France - aboard Hospital Ship HS 'Esquibo' - to hospital at England. At England - on 11 August 1917 - Sergeant Davy was admitted to the No 1 (New Zealand) General Hospital - at Brockenhurst, England. In late 1917 Sergeant Davy embarked from England - aboard HMNZ Transport Ship 'Mokoia' - and he returned home to New Zealand. He was discharged from the NZEF at New Zealand - on 30 January 1918 - as no longer physically fit for further war service - on account of wounds received at Belgium. Vincent R. Davy died - in 1961 - at Nelson. Citation for Sergeant Vincent R. Davy's DCM : "Awarded for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He showed the greatest disregard for his (own) personal safety in tackling and extinguishing a fire which had broken out in the gun-pit under hostile shell-fire. He had on previous occasions shown great coolness in keeping his men in action through heavy shell-fire" : 4th Supplement to the 'London Gazette' : # 1701 : 14 August 1917.
