Description
Head and shoulders studio portrait of a man in military uniform. Thought to be Second Lieutenant George Birnie (serial no. 60290). Birnie was born on 2 February 1887. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs I. Birnie (wife), 33 Queen Street, Westport, New Zealand. Before enlisting for service during World War One Birnie worked as a telegraphist. He is thought to have worked for the Post and Telegraph guard at Cable Bay before embarking with the 34th Reinforcements Auckland Infantry Regiment, A Company on 8 February 1918. He embarked from Wellington, New Zealand for Liverpool, England. Birnie married Irene Sarah Adeline Peters on 9 December 1915 and had one son named Robert who was born on 2 May 1917. Birnie survived the war and was discharged on 4 November 1919.
