Ring

Production date
1890-1916
Description
One silver ring, plain band with a medallion on one side, signet style ring. 'WO' scratched onto the centre of the medallion. Inside the ring it reads 'DEUTSCH OSTAFRIKA'. A ring more than likely made from a "Rupie" coin that was the currency of German East Africa (Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania) between 1890 and 1916, and remained in circulation until 1920. WO may be the initials of William Ovens, Sister Catherine Oven's brother, who served in WWI and was posted in Capetown in 1918 and may have acquired the ring as a souvenir.
