Description
Polished brass hand-held launcher with black wooden grip and metal ring at end of grip. Long black cylindrical barrel. Rubber grip handle attached to the top of the barrel with metal brackets. Includes line throwing rocket which is a cylindrical silver tube with 2 long metal arms stamped with "PAINS-WESSEX / SCHERMULY / INTERNATIONAL NO.2 / 41mm LINE-THROWING ROCKET / CONFORMS TO S.O.L.A.S., D.Tp. ACCEPTED". Rocket is stamped on the end with "EXPIRED APR 1993". Rocket has metal cable and small length of waxed cord attached. Small round steel spent cartridge with red paper seal labelled on side "PAINS WESSEX 079". Rocket launcher, rocket, line and cartridge mounted on varnished board display case with Perspex cover. Parts held by hooks, cable ties and screws. Plaque inside case reads 'PAIN'S [sic] WESSEX SCHERMULLY [sic] / USED BY / WAIMEA ELECTRIC POWER BOARD / FOR LINE CONSTRUCTION / BETWEEN 1963 & 1993'. Used by the Nelson Harbour Board in the early 1950s and loaned to the Waimea Electric Power Board in the 1960s. The Power Board purchased it in the 1980s and used it until 1993.
