(Most probably) Private William Solly (1894-1931). 1NZEF Service # 6/349, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 12th (Nelson) Company, 1NZEF. Born 12 May 1894 - at Takaka, Nelson District. Son of William (1856-1917) and Mary-Anne (or Marion) (Godsell) Solly. Prior to enlistment - for World War 1 war service - William Solly was employed as a Labourer - at Kaikoura, Marlborough District. Enlisted for war service 16 August 1914 - at Nelson. Embarked from New Zealand - for overseas war service - 16 October 1914 with the Main Body 1NZEF. Served at Egypt (1915) - Gallipoli (1915) - and France & Belgium (1916-1917-1918). Joined his Battalion - Canterbury Infantry Regiment - 12th (Nelson) Company 1NZEF - at the Dardanelles (Gallipoli Peninsula) - on 4 May 1915. Served at Gallipoli until the evacuation of all Allied forces from Gallipoli Peninsula on 26 December 1915. 31 December 1915 - Re-joined his Battalion - the 1st Battalion of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment 1NZEF - after evacuation from Gallipoli - at Moascar. 24 March 1916 - Embarked from Alexandria, Egypt for war service at France. 3 May 1917 - Joined his Battalion - 1st Battalion of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment 1NZEF - in the field - at France. Served at France - 1917 to 1918 - until the end of hostilities on 11 November 1918. Returned to New Zealand - aboard SS 'Hororata'.on 13 April 1919. Discharged from 1NZEF on 13 April 1919. He had served on overseas war service for 4 years and 142 days. William Solly died - 29 November 1931 - of Pulmonary Tuberculosis - at Nelson. He was 37 years of age. His next of kin - at his death - was his wife Mrs Lena Annie Solly, of Russell Street, Port Nelson.
