Alfred Fell was born in Yorkshire in 1817 and emigrated to New Zealand in 1842. He came to Nelson on the Lord Auckland, arriving in February 1842, and began business as a merchant. He went into partnership with Henry Seymour in the firm of Fell and Seymour, and married Seymour's daughter Fanny. In 1859 he retired and returned to England for his family's education. His eldest son, C.Y. (Charles Yates) Fell, returned to Nelson in 1870 and set up the legal practice of Fell and Atkinson.
