Born in Invercargill, educated at Southland Boys High School, Otago University. Rhodes Scholar in 1930. Served mainly in Ethiopia during World War 2. Member of the Colonial Admin Service in Uganda 1933-1953, retiring as Commander for Community Development in 1953. Returned to New Zealand and worked at various universities, including Victoria University of Wellington, where he was the Director of University Extension and Associate Professor, and was appointed as an Associate Professor in 1969. Was the President of the Humanist Society of New Zealand 1987-1989. (Information from 'Who's Who in New Zealand', 1991).
