Thomas Renwick (1818-1879) was born in Scotland in 1818, practised medicine in Great Britain then was surgeon-superintendent on the "Thomas Harrison" which arrived in Nelson on the 26th May 1842. He began a medical practise and married Adeline Absolom in 1846. He was a trustee of the Nelson School Society in 1847, and a trustee of the Church of Scotland in Nelson. He became a sheep farmer and gained a depasturage license for the Awatere in 1849 at Dumgree run. He pressed for the establishment of a separate Province of Marlborough.
He married Anne Smith in 1879 after the death of Adeline.
