This collection was compiled by Pat Win mainly in correspondence with Captain J.S. Brown, chairman of the Maritime and Local History Museum, Deal. The importance of the collection to Nelson is that the New Zealand Company expedition ships, of 1841, brought out two Deal boats and eight Deal boatmen with them. Deal boats have 2 sails with a lugsail on the main mast and the mizzen has a standing lug on the aft and a dipping lug on the main. These boats were used to explore and indeed it was on the Deal boat that Nelson Harbour was found. They also transported survey parties to their survey areas. The Deal boats remained as pilot vessels along with pilots Mr J.S. Cross and Mr W. Claringbold, both from Deal. Mr Cross was pilot and harbourmaster until 1882. My thanks go to Mr Win for providing me with this information.
