Black and white environmental photograph of Hardy Street. The image is a scene looking west along Hardy street at the Hardy and Trafalgar street intersection. In the foreground is a dirt and gravel road. A dog lies in the middle of the road and beyond the dog five men stand across the road leaning on the handles of brooms. Beyond the standing men, horses and carts line the road. There is a man in each of the drivers seats. In between the horses and carts is the Symonds Street gas lamp. In the middle-ground on the left is a two storied building with quions, the Commercial Hotel, on the site now occupied by The Nelson Provincial Museum TA445. The hotel has parapets dividing the two stories, which have round-top windows. The top of the building has a balcony around the edge. Buildings are visible lining the south west side of Hardy street. On the right is a one storied brick building. In the background are the Port hills and sky.
