Porotiti
Maker and Role
Author/Artist: Brian Flintoff
Description
Porotiti carved from the whalebone of a whale named Tahi given to the artist by Ngati kuri. Its design comes from a series Flintoff did exploring the possibilities suggested by an old account described one with ears. This is played by looping the cord around ones hands and twirling it a little to start it spinning. By applying alternate pressure then relaxing the cord it will create a hum. Blowing gently on its vanes, it starts to sing.
