Brass spyglass style telescope with leather sleeve around the middle, signed in inner tube "DOLLAND LONDON / DAY or NIGHT". Maker not to be confused with predominant instrument and lens maker "Dollond of London." Provenance reports that the telescope was of the ship "Airedale", a iron brig-rigged steamer of 363 tons, built at South Stockton in 1857. Intended for the branch mail service between Nelson, Picton, Wellington, Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. In 1871 sailing from Manukau she was bound for Taranaki and the south with English mail on board when she struck a reef near Taniwha Point, north of the Waitara River.
