In the centre of the composition is the outline of an artist’s palette. Underneath and to the left of the palette one branching brown stem is depicted with leaflets in odd pinnate formation. The leaflets are small and oval-shaped. The branching stem extends and winds around a border, and through the thumb-hole of the palette.

Embossed in the top right corner is "In deo confido". The page is titled "NEW ZEALAND FERNS E.C. Harris." and "PUBLISHED BY H.D. JACKSON. NELSON. N.Z. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED." and on a piece of paper affixed to paper "Presented by Dr. F.A. BETT Nelson"
