Private Victor C BAIGENT (1897-1919). NZEF Service # 80326; Private, Otago Infantry Regiment, 43rd Reinforcements, NZEF. Born 2 November 1897 - at Nelson. Son of Robert & Lena Baigent - of Wakefield. Prior to enlistment for war service Victor Baigent was a farmer - at Wakefield. Victor Baigent enlisted for war service on 20 May 1918 - at Nelson. He was 20 years of age. On 2 October 1918 Private Victor Baigent left New Zealand for overseas war service - with the 43rd Reinforcements NZEF - aboard HMNZ transport ship T11 'Matatua' - from Port of Wellington. Private Victor Baigent arrived at England after the Armistice - of 11 November 1918 - that would silence the guns and end World War One. Whilst at England Private Baigent became sick with Influenza. He died at the Military Hospital - at Tidworth, Wiltshire, England. He was 21 years of age. Private Victor Baigent is buried at Tidworth Military Cemetery, Wiltshire, England (Grave ref: C.378). The Officiating Chaplain was Rev. T.F. Gilfillen. Private Victor Baigent is also remembered at his hometown in New Zealand - on the Wakefield War Memorial (1914-1918) - at Wakefield.
